Youth Throwing Drills the most basic of all youth baseball drills, and many instructors feel that it is the most important fundamental of all. It is vital for parents to make sure that their children develop proper throwing techniques from the time they can throw a baseball, around the age of eight or so. The importance of throwing a baseball with proper grip can not be overestimated. Youth throwing drills must emphasize four important elements: Throw the ball by gripping it with the index finger and middle finger on the ball; point your shoulder opposite from your throwing hand in the direction of your target; step in the direction of your target when you release the ball; and follow through after you release the ball with your back leg so that both legs are parallel upon the completion of the throw.
Developing good mechanics all begins at the balance point. This is probably one of the most poorly misunderstood aspects of the mechanics. Some pitching “experts” teach pitchers to reach a balance point at the peak of their leg lift. This is technique is absolutely detrimental to velocity, and no high velocity MLB pitcher reaches this so-called point of balance in their delivery. Professional pitchers are balanced throughout their delivery, but most importantly, they are moving towards the plate at each state of their mechanics. The traditional balance point idea is that pitchers should be perpendicular with their weight shifted over the drive leg. This technique is an absolute velocity killer.
Be careful with using resistance training. Resistance training became popular back in the 1990s, and has stuck around today. One method that I see many people doing is tying a parachute type device to the end of a bat and swinging it so the parachute inflates, causing resistance. However, this is a quick way to pull a muscle and teach you very poor mechanics of bringing the bat through the zone effectively.
