If you have successfully thrown a strike or got the batter to commit to swinging, then you will have entered the best count for a pitcher. The 0-2 count every pitchers favorite count because they can practically toy with the opposing batter. Keep in mind, the batter also has some strategies for this particular pitch count. Typically, batters will crowd the plate and will choke up on the bat because they are either trying to get hit by the pitch or just trying to make some form of contact. However, this also works to your advantage because the hitter will also be more aggressive in this situation.
Instead, really focus on swing consistency and repetition to help increase the speed you bring it through the zone. Even a slight increase in overall speed (think just 2 to 5 miles per hour increase) can give you up to 40 feet extra distance, and a ton more velocity when you square one up.
You can find many youth baseball drills on the Internet covering hitting, fielding and throwing. Some drills are free and some require subscription or for you to order a DVD.Free baseball drills allow you greater flexibility in trying a variety and see what works best for you as the coach and your youth baseball team. Always remember that drills should be age appropriate. The right fielding drill for a 14 year-old boy will not suit and 8-year old and vice versa. There are many baseball coaching resources and communities like Weplay available to help with any questions you might have. Dont underestimate the passion of the community around you.
